Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice delivers a stripped down and delicate rendition of U2’s anthem ‘One’ during the final scenes of the episode. The melody and lyrics set the perfect tone as we watch Jack and Rebecca reconcile, only to see the entire family’s grief and devastation as the details of Jack’s death are finally revealed.
Originally released by U2 on the album Achtung Baby, ‘One’ is famously born out of the band’s internal struggles and near-breakup. Recorded in Berlin on the eve of German reunification, the band was said to be in conflict over the future of their sound, until they stumbled upon a few chord progressions that would ultimately become ‘One.’
“Suddenly something very powerful [was] happening in the room,” recalls The Edge. “Everyone recognized it was a special piece. It was like we’d caught a glimpse of what the song could be.”
Rice’s cover was completed for (Ăhk-to͝ong Ba͞y-bi) Covered,a special tribute album commissioned in 2011 by British music mag Q to commemorate their 25th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the release of Achtung Baby. Featuring covers by an eclectic group of artists – like Patti Smith, Nine Inch Nails, Snow Patrol, Garbage and Jack White, among others – proceeds from the album’s digital sales benefit Concern Worldwide, an Ireland-based non-profit organization that provides aid to the world’s poorest countries.
