Over four intrigue-filled seasons, the driving emotion of ‘Scotland’ set the tone as the opening theme for Reign, the CW’s period drama about the young Mary Queen of Scots. Consistently one of the most requested unreleased song on Tunefind over the past few years, previously fans had to make do with brief versions ripped from the show, or a rare live performance by the band.

ReignReign music supervisor Madonna Wade-Reed shares, “One of the executive producers, Brad Silberling, knew someone who worked with the band. ‘Scotland’ was a song that was being worked on and ended up being perfect for the series, so it was turned into the main title song.”

About the song, Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers recalls, “In the long pursuit of music, I remember working at a coffee shop, deli and restaurant to make the ends meet. The song was born out of this feeling that the world, the people around you, will often just not understand you: ‘You could/never/feel my story/it’s all you know.’ It became a rally cry to try to persevere – ‘I will not fold/she’s in control.'”

“The song also was special to us because it had this beautiful driving rhythm that Jer [Jeremiah Fraites] played that reminded us of battle drums, like something out of Braveheart – hence the strange name – Scotland,” recalls Schultz.

In addition to providing the iconic theme song, other tracks by The Lumineers were featured throughout the series. As the show came to an end last year, music supervisor Madonna Wade-Reed shared her favorite music moments from Reign, including The Lumineers’ ‘Charlie Boy’ and Vitamin String Quartet’s cover of ‘Stubborn Love.’

A scruffy independent Americana trio out of Denver, The Lumineers were founded in 2005 by Wesley Schultz (lead vocals, guitar) and Jeremiah Fraites (drums, percussion). Cellist and vocalist Neyla Pekarek joined the band in 2010.

Following the huge success of their addictive earworm ‘Ho Hey’ in 2012, The Lumineers gained a passionate fan base. Even President Obama weighed in, putting the band’s second #1 hit, ‘Stubborn Love’ on his presidential playlist, alongside the likes of Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone.

With a stripped back, timeless sound, the band has also had success in sync, with many songs by The Lumineers featured in tv shows and movies. The band even wrote that haunting hymn ‘The Hanging Tree‘ sung by Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I.

The Lumineers previously released two albums on U.S. indie label Dualtone Records. Their self-titled first album, The Lumineers, was released in 2012 and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It has been certified triple platinum in the U.S. and Canada. Their second album, Cleopatra, was released in 2016 and debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200. It is currently certified Platinum in the U.S. C-Sides marks their third release, and also includes the tracks ‘For Fra’ and ‘Visions of China.’
