Hello: Top New TV Shows of 2018 Driving Music Discovery

Here at Tunefind we’ll be looking back at some of the highlights from 2018, including the top TV music moments, top movie soundtracks, and most popular artists on Tunefind.  

While we had to say goodbye to some of our favorite music-centric tv shows this year, a lot of new shows are helping fill the void. Below we recap the most popular new shows in 2018 that have the highest activity and fan engagement on Tunefind. These new shows are the ones that sent fans scrambling to identify the songs and artists featured. All of these shows feature not only great storytelling, but those stories are enhanced and improved by stellar music selection.

Here are the top new shows of 2018 that are driving music discovery:

Music Supervisor: Jen Malone

The FOX network medical drama incorporates new music that Tunefind users can’t wait to find and listen to. Emmy nominated music supervisor, Jen Malone gives fans the opportunity to discover a variety of artists’ music including Bishop Briggs and Raphael Lake, Ben Fisher, Aaron Levy & Daniel Ryan Murphy with multiple features through both season 1 and 2.

Music supervisor, Andrea von Foerster gives fans a variety of American rock music to experience paired with the conflicts of a large cattle farm, Indian reservation, land developers, and Yellowstone National Park. Season 1 features songs from onscreen performances by cast members Whiskey Myers and Ryan Bingham.


Music Supervisor: Maggie Phillips

Top Composer of 2018, Jeff Russo scores the dystopian, sci-fi, cyberpunk series. With the music supervision of Maggie Phillips, Altered Carbon gives fans dark and spine-chilling music to discover with tracks from Pink Martini and Sune Rose Wagner, who took Top TV Song two weeks in a row with his cover of White Zombie’s “More Human Than Human.”


Music Supervisor: Kier Lehman

The CW superhero hit, under the music supervision of Kier Lehman, is steadily tracked by fans hunting the dynamic music. Hip-hop artist, Godholly provides Black Lightning originals–with on screen appearances too–throughout seasons 1 and 2.


Music Supervisor: Jonathan Christiansen

Cloak & Dagger earned Top TV Song with fans clamoring over the music of unsigned artists, selected by music supervisor Jonathan Christiansen for the Freeform series. Series composer Mark Isham released a digital album of the score and Marvel Music released a digital soundtrack featuring Tunefind’s Top Song of 2018, ‘Arise’ by The Siege, plus tracks by MILCK, Tunefind Top Artist of 2018 Ruelle and more.


Music Supervisor: Lynn Fainchtein

This sci-fi thriller is the first German-language Netflix original series. Dark gives fans an array of international tracks to explore in the dark wave and experimental genres with music supervision by Lynn Fainchtein.


Music Supervisor: Ben Hochstein & Jamie Dooner

The Netflix original coming-of-age TV series, On My Block shows the realness and violence for these teens growing up in their predominantly Hispanic and black neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles. The 10-episode season packed a punch with thoughtfully placed contemporary R&B and Hip-hop music, music supervised by Ben Hochstein and Jamie Dooner, that help tell this story and give fans new hits to discover.


Music Supervisor: Susan Jacobs

Susan Jacobs, the first winner in the Emmy category for Music Supervision, took a different direction with this psychological thriller miniseries. Sharp Objects recently released the sought after soundtrack and has been featured twice on Tunefind’s Top TV Song.


Music Supervisor: Matt Biffa

The British dark comedy-drama, based on a graphic novel, blends vintage rock perfectly with the romantically nihilistic story. With music supervision by Matt Biffa, The End of the Fucking World gives fans a wealth of songs, old and new, to discover in this eight-episode season.


Music Supervisor: Libby Umstead (s1), Ann Kline (s2)

The ABC medical drama follows a young surgical savant and the challenges of autism. Music supervisors Libby Umstead (s1) and Ann Kline (s2) utilize a variety of popular music genres, with Emmy-nominated Dan Romer serving as the composer for the series.


Ones to Watch

Now, most of those shows above have had the better part of a full year to build their audiences. We’ve noticed several other shows that debuted late in the year or had much shorter seasons and have been gaining momentum and fans rapidly in recent months. Here are the ones to watch going into 2019 (fingers crossed they will be renewed!):

Music Supervisor: Tricia Halloran

Another medical drama hit, New Amsterdam is inspired by the oldest public hospital in the U.S., Bellevue Hospital in New York City, and features a variety of alt-rock and indie pop.


Music Supervisor: Amanda Krieg Thomas

Pose highlights some fire music in a celebratory and nostalgic romp through the glamorous New York ballroom culture of the ’80s.


Music Supervisor: Michelle Silverman, Bob Thiele Jr.

Mayans M.C. is the next chapter in the Sons of Anarchy saga, driving fans to hunt down the featured music and follow the story of Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes from week to week.


Music Supervisor: Lynn Fainchtein

Spanish teen crime drama Élite had Tunefind users flocking to find the captivating music of this series.


Music Supervisor: Becca Gatrell

Netflix original The Innocents features synth-pop tunes that lead fans down the dangerous path of the supernatural series.

Already confirmed for a second season, the Netflix series Insatiable features pop rock jams that make fans hungry for more.

Full of fun modern anthems, original songs, and Gen X nostalgia covers, ABC’s new hit drama A Million Little Things is one to keep on the radar.

The female-centric thriller Killing Eve sucked us into the obsessive relationship between spy and assassin, and the soundtrack was a big part of the appeal.
