Playing over the emotional scenes at the end of the episode, this cover version of ‘Wake Me Up’ accompanies the Saltzman family story effortlessly. A melancholy rendition for the heartbreaking scene, producer Tommee Proffit and chill-inducing vocals from Fleurie completely reframe Avicii’s chart-topping dance hit.

“Covers can be so magical if the artist takes the existing song and then makes it completely their own,” says Legacies music supervisor Chris Mollere. “I love when artists take a known song and then change up the arrangement, style, vibe and more!”

Swedish DJ and producer Avicii released ‘Wake Me Up’ as the lead single on his 2013 debut studio album, True. ‘Wake Me Up’ was written by Avicii, Mike Einziger of Incubus (featured on acoustic guitar), and soul singer Aloe Blacc (on vocals). Originally viewed as controversial for its country/folk tinge, the addictive dance mix became a summer anthem around the world.

Regular collaborators award-winning producer Tommee Profitt and atmospheric soundscapist Fleurie came together again for this Avicii cover, which was also featured last month on Charmed, another new hit from The CW.

Interestingly, this song marks the duo’s second week in a row at the top of Tunefind’s chart, but with a different song. Last week’s hit: a cover of Linkin Park’s ‘In The End’ featuring Jung Youth.

“As you can see over the past two episodes, we love covers and the power that they bring to the episodes,” shared Mollere. “I have enormous respect and love for artists that take an amazing existing song and then take it to a whole other place. There are even some songs out there where the artist covering the song can make me love their new incarnation more than the original version! It’s the power of music personified!”

Profitt released his latest album, Cinematic Songs Volume 5, in November. The album features Fleurie along with Ruelle, Sam Tinnesz, and other Profitt favorites. Fleurie’s enchanting voice is highlighted on three other volumes, as well as having singles released by Profitt, including ‘In The End’ and ‘Wake Me Up.’

FleurieFleurie, the musical moniker of singer/songwriter Lauren Strahm, grew up in Canton, Michigan, singing at church and studying classical piano. Fleurie moved to Australia to work on her personal music before heading back to the states and settling in Nashville at age 21, where she landed a job writing songs for film and television. Her debut full-length album, Love and War, was released in September 2016 with songs ‘Breathe’, ‘Love and War’, ‘Soldier, ‘Turns You To Stone’, and ‘Hurt Like Hell’, subsequently being featured in various TV shows.

Fleurie’s song ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, also from Love and War, was sampled by Kendrick Lamar on his song ‘FEEL’ from his 2017 album DAMN and in 2018, Fleurie collaborated with electronic pop artist Ruelle on her popular song ‘Carry You’.

Like Fleurie, Tommee Profitt is originally from Michigan and currently lives in Tennessee. Profitt is noted for his collaborations with Christian hip-hop artist, NF, writing and production on all three of NF’s full-length releases. The first album, Mansion, which also featured Fleurie on the title track, and the second album, Therapy Session, both debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. NF’s third studio album, Perception, debuted at No. 1 overall on the Billboard 200.

Chris Mollere has been the man behind the music for The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, the two precursors to Legacies.

“We’re so fortunate to be able to feature music from such talented artists like Tommee Proffit, Fleurie, Sleeping At Last, STRFKR, Cary Brothers and so many other extraordinary artists over the years,” says Mollere “We’re so thankful to each and every one of the artists for allowing us to feature their music to help us tell our story!”
