Top TV Song Last Week: King of Shadow by Kat Cunning

Netflix teen drama Trinkets takes top tv song last week with an on-screen performance by Katrina Cunningham–stage name Kat Cunning–who plays Elodie’s love interest, Sabine. ‘King of Shadow’ fully captivates the audience, especially Elodie (Brianna Hildebrand).

 

 

Sabine’s arrival as a recurring role takes awhile but when it finally happens, all eyes are on the real singer-songwriter, Kat Cunning. She performs her own original song ‘King of Shadow’ at Luka’s club and it can also be heard a few episodes later when Elodie is grounded to her room. Cunning sings another original, ‘Birds’ in the finale episode. She has an indie sound and haunting lyrics covering topics of love and mental health. 

Fitting nicely into the moody, alternative soundtrack of Trinkets, music supervised by Maggie Phillips, The New York Times has described that, “the sultry-voiced Kat Cunning brings an exquisite indie-siren quality…” And NYLON calls Cunning, “A dynamic and exciting new queer voice in the music industry. Prepare to be mesmerized.”

Kat Cunning creates songs that blend pop, soul and Baroque arrangements. A SUNY Purchase Dance Conservatory Grad, she got her start in Baroque-Burlesque Operas with Company XIV. Kat made her Broadway debut playing Emilie in Josie Rourke’s Les Liaison Dangereuses, with Janet Mcteer and Liev Schreiber. She also starred in Cirque Du Soleil’s, PARAMOUR, and co-wrote her character Lila’s score to suit her voice. Kat frequents NYC’s Sleep No More as the Master of Ceremonies. 

In 2017, Kat performed as the only live component in Refinery 29’s ’29Rooms’ Fashion Week exhibit. She brought artist Juno Calypso’s room to life with real-time interpretations of audience member’s dreams, via song. Kat also sang some of her original work, including her debut track ‘Wild Poppies.’

In 2018, Kat Cunning opened for LP and Noah Kahan for the sold out North American Tour.

Starting both her singing and acting careers around four years ago, Kat Cunning’s most recognized acting role is the six-episode stint on HBO series The Deuce as Christina Fuego. Playing Sabine on Trinkets is a fitting role for Cunning with her entrancing songs. 

Kat Cunning’s song ‘Eve’ has been featured on the CW’s Riverdale.
