Ghost reminisces in Angela’s apartment.

Mid-episode, James St. Patrick (aka Ghost, played by Omari Hardwick) is in Angela’s apartment while the anthemic keys, strings and drums come together accompanied by Miguel’s sultry tone and expressive lyrics.

If you haven’t figured it out from the lyrics, ‘R.A.N.’ is an acronym for “real ass n***a.” ‘R.A.N.’ was written by musician Miguel and tells the realities of dating a hustler. This track is featured on the 2018 film Superfly soundtrack and Miguel’s music video is intercut with the film’s clips . Lyrically relatable to drug dealer Ghost and his ambitions to leave his trade behind him, ‘R.A.N.’ had Power fans going wild.

Miguel began pursuing music when he was 13 years old. He signed with Jive Records in 2007 and released a debut studio album, All I Want Is You in 2010. Miguel moved to RCA Records, after the dissolution of Jive in 2011.  He released his second studio album, Kaleidoscope Dream in 2012, followed three years later, by Wildheart, both of which debuted within the Top Five of the Billboard 200. In 2017, Miguel released his fourth studio album, War & Leisure.

The California native became known for his pop/R&B ballads but his style incorporates R&B, hop-hop, rock, funk and electric. He credits influences like David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Kanye West, Freddie Mercury and he greatly admires Stevie Wonder and John Lennon. His vocals have been compared to Babyface and Prince, whereas his vocal influences additionally include The Beatles, The Police and Def Leppard.

Miguel shared with Paper Magazine that he refers to his music as, “fly, funkadelic, intergalactic-hip-hop-meets-sexy-orgasmic crazy, dope s**t.” Miguel identifies as part of the “new wave” of R&B artists like Frank Ocean and The Weeknd.

Miguel’s dream would be to collaborate with James Brown who he’s told Paper is the “last innovator [for me] when it comes to soul.” He’s had numerous collaborations and assisted in gold and platinum singles with Mariah Carey’s ‘#Beautiful’ (platinum), A$AP Rocky’s ‘Everyday’ (gold), and Mac Miller’s ‘Weekend’ (platinum).

Miguel has had other connections to some big names, playing in Ben Affleck’s 2016 crime drama Live by Night as a Cuban-American gangster and covering ‘Crazy In Love’ by Beyonce in Spanish for the theatrical trailers for Fifty Shades Darker (still currently unreleased).

Notably, Miguel sang a duet of ‘Remember Me’ with Natalia Lafourcade featured on the Disney Pixar movie Coco soundtrack and also performed the song live at the Oscars in 2018.
