On the Radio (Music from the Netflix Original Series Sex Education)

by Chip Taylor

from Sex Education Soundtrack · Season 2 · Episode 8

Otis leaves a voicemail for Maeve. End credits.

The instrumental intro of ‘On the Radio’ plays as Otis walks away from Maeve’s home. The soulful tune continues as Isaac listens to the voicemail Otis has left for Maeve. Otis continues walking with a soft, hopeful smile. The song builds and leads into the end credits, closing out the season.

This cover of the 2006 Regina Spektor song was recorded by Taylor especially for Sex Education, and released for fans to enjoy as they finished watching this latest season. Taylor brings a slower, darker tone to Spektor’s poppy, uptempo original. His gravelly vocals had many fans online wondering if this was, in fact, an under-the-radar track by Johnny Cash.

Close listeners will remember Taylor’s distinctive voice from season 1 of Sex Education. His song, ‘F**k All the Perfect People,’ gained popularity after it was featured in episode 2.

Walking out of the party; Maeve arrives home; O…

Taylor actually had another song featured earlier in season 2, as well. The track underscores Maeve’s struggles with her unreliable addict mother, and a rare good moment between them.

Most well-known for writing ‘Angel of the Morning’ and ‘Wild Thing’, Chip Taylor– born James Wesley Voight, brother of actor Jon Voight– has been in the music industry since the 60s. His songs have been covered by countless musicians including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.

His first famous hit, ‘Wild Thing,’ was originally recorded in 1965 by Jordan Christopher & the Wild Ones, but grew to fame in 1966 when the Troggs recorded it. A year later, the track was sung live by Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival and later covered by the Runaways and the Muppets.

His other big hit, ‘Angel of the Morning,’ was originally recorded by Evie Sands in the same year. It became a recognizable hit and reached the Top Ten for Merrilee Rush & the Turnabouts in 1968. In 1981, it was revived, becoming a second Top Ten hit and a gold record, selling millions for Juice Newton.

Taylor has written numerous country and pop hits over the years. A compilation CD, Wild Thing: The Songs of Chip Taylor was released in 2009 by Ace Records. The CD features Taylor’s compositions recorded by other artists.

Taylor left music and became a professional gambler. He restarted his music career in 1993 when he met singer/violinist Carrie Rodriguez. He performed and recorded with Rodriguez for several years, releasing multiple Americana albums.

The duo went on to release successful solo albums after their time together, including Taylor’s Unglorious Hallelujah/Red Red Rose. Sonic Magazine praised the 2006 album as “a future classic” and continuing, “This is the best we’ve heard from Chip Taylor so far.”

In 2011, Taylor released his first children’s album Golden Kids Rules and was accompanied by his three granddaughters. Taylor has since released five more albums, including F**k All the Perfect People (2012) and In Sympathy of a Heartbreak (2020), both of which had songs featured on Sex Education.
