Winners of the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards Music Categories

While Schitt’s Creek and Succession dominated this year’s Emmy Awards, the music categories cast a wide net and recognized some of the other stellar entertainment that graced the small screen over the past year.

In a series of virtual ceremonies over the past week, the 72nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards and Creative Arts Emmy awards recognized artists and technicians in over 120 categories. The key music categories include both original composition and music supervision.

Music supervisor Robin Urdang, along with executive producers/series creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, won this year’s award for Outstanding Music Supervision for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. This is the third music supervision award in a row for Amazon’s acclaimed series, following wins in 2019 and 2018. Mrs. Maisel took home a total of four Emmys this year.

Among the composers recognized by the Television Academy this year, Ludwig Göransson won the award for original dramatic score for his work on The Mandalorian. The debut of the cinematic Star Wars series helped launch Disney+ and landed the new streaming service a total of 7 Emmys.

HBO’s hit series Watchmen led this year’s nominations with a whopping 26 this year, winning a total of 11 Emmys when all was said and done. The awards for the acclaimed series included recognition for the powerful score written by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

HBO’s Euphoria also won three awards at this year’s Emmys, including Zendaya’s win for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Newcomer Labrinth picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for his song ‘All For Us,’ which was featured prominently in the series.

Double nominated composers Laura Karpman and Nathan Barr each picked up one award this year. Karpman was recognized for her score for Discovery’s timely documentary series Why We Hate. Barr won his Emmy for the main titles of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix original Hollywood.
