Farewell: Top TV Shows for Music Discovery that Ended in 2020

Here at Tunefind we’re looking back at some of the highlights from 2020, including the top movie soundtracks, top new TV shows driving music discovery, top tv syncs, and most popular artists on Tunefind. We have a lot of fun stories as we look back at highlights of film and TV music during 2020. But this is one sad note: A look back at some TV music powerhouse shows that aired their final episode this year. These shows are Tunefind fan favorites that have helped us discover thousands of new songs and artists over the past fifteen years.

The hip hop music and entertainment company Empire Entertainment put out hits for six years. The FOX series has released 25 singles, EPs, and albums since the beginning of the series.

This Canadian comedy gave us countless Mariah Carey references, unparalleled style from Moira Rose, and was ‘Simply the Best.’ Schitt’s Creek swept the comedy categories at the Emmy’s this year as fans said goodbye to the cult phenomenon. But in the words of the great Mariah Carey, “you’ll always be a part of me.”

Music Supervisors: Nora Felder (S3-7), Thomas Golubić (S1-2)

After seven seasons, Showtime drama was unexpectedly cancelled, leaving fans shocked. The series soundtrack gave us a mix of nostalgic classic and deep cuts. Not to worry, Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan himself) has commented on social media that the team is working on a Ray Donovan finale/movie that will hopefully go into production soon.

Music Supervisor: Andrew Gowan

Bojack Horseman featured a catchy theme song by composer (and Black Keys drummer) Patrick Carney and his uncle Ralph Carney, along with incidental music by Jesse Novak. Both are included on the soundtrack album, as well as the popular ‘Back in the ’90s’ performed by Grouplove. But in addition to these constants, the adult animated series highlighted artists like Tegan and Sara, Oberhofer, Jenny Owen Youngs, and the War on Drugs.

Music Supervisor: Season Kent

13 Reasons Why tells a story with challenging themes, but through the extreme depictions of teenage struggles, the soundtrack soared. Fans enjoyed original music from Eskmo and big music moments from Lord Huron, YUNGBLUD, and series executive producer Selena Gomez.

How to Get Away with Murder went out with a bang and nabbed a top TV song highlight from the series finale. A Shondaland hit, HTGAWM gave fans twists, turns, and memorable music moments right from the start. A 2016 soundtrack album even featured a theme for ‘The Keating 5’ by series composer Photek.

The members of the Behavior Analysis Unit have been solving crimes for fifteen years, but the series came to a bittersweet end earlier this year. Criminal Minds is a three-time BMI TV Music Award winner and a four-time ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards winner for Top TV Series.

Music Supervisors: Liz Gallacher (S3), Lynn Fainchtein (S1-2)

This German sci-fi thriller featured original score by composer Ben Frost and always spiked up Tunefind’s Trending charts, including a top TV song during the final season. The series opening theme was by Apparat and Soap&Skin and music from Roomful of Teeth was used in multiple episodes across all three seasons.

Power was a regular on Tunefind’s trending music chart during its six season run. With placements from sync favorites Freya Ridings, Seinabo Sey, and Jacob Banks it’s no surprise the Starz series spin-off Power Book II: Ghost is following closely in the chart-topper’s footsteps.

Supernatural aired 327 episodes over fifteen seasons, and (after season 11) became the longest-running live-action fantasy series in America. The series featured composer Christopher Lennertz and Jay Gruska for original score and many classic rock placements. ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ by Kansas plays over the opening of each season finale episode (except season 1).
