Top TV Song Last Week: Anyone by Skylar Astin

NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist takes the top spot for the most popular song on Tunefind last week. This musical comedy/drama series features cover songs by the musical cast to evoke their true feelings to lead Zoey Clarke (played by Jane Levy), who can hear their “heart songs.”

“In this episode, there is a Freaky Friday aspect to the storyline as Zoey’s powers glitch, resulting in songs being switched amongst the characters singing them,” shares Zoey music supervisor Jennifer Ross. “Early in the episode, Max (played by Skylar Astin) appears to be in a blissful state but then suddenly sings ‘Anyone.’ This confuses Zoey because it’s opposite to how Max appears to be. All of which begins an exploration of solving the mystery of matching the songs Zoey hears to the correct people. Ultimately at the end of the episode, we discover that Max and Emily’s song have switched, thus revealing that Emily is suffering from depression and is making a cry for help.”

“Early on it was clear that this moment would need to pack a powerful punch. We landed on ‘Anyone’ as it was a perfect marriage of song connecting to a deep emotional storyline,” continued Ross. “In that respect, it’s heart-warming to see how it has resonated with the audience. Hopefully, the use of ‘Anyone’ allowed some comfort to those who may benefit from being seen and heard for their struggles.”

‘Anyone’ is a cover version performed by the cast, but this track belongs to pop star Demi Lovato. The cast performances are released each week on their own episode album. Demi Lovato’s ‘Anyone’ is the first track on Lovato’s 2021 album Dancing With The Devil…The Art of Starting Over (Deluxe Edition) released earlier this month. Lovato’s album and her docuseries by the same name chronicle the singer’s journey and struggles over the past three years, including her near fatal overdose and road to recovery. Demi’s comeback single is a vulnerable ballad about wanting someone to be there to help her through the tough times.
