Winners of the 11th Annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards
The Guild of Music Supervisors celebrated 11 years of recognizing excellence in the craft of music supervision with a virtual gala awards ceremony on April 11th. While waiting to join the live stream, guests were treated to a compilation of the previous years of GMS awards.
From the first modest breakfast event 11 years ago, this challenging year called for a different and intimate gathering from the safety of our own homes. A live chat featured allowed attendees from the worlds of film, television, advertising, gaming, and music to come together to celebrate the nominees and winners of the 11th Annual Guild of Music Supervisors awards.
Top honors for big budget film went to Soul (music supervisor Tom MacDougall), while Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (music supervisor Dawn Sutter Madell), Promising Young Woman (music supervisor Susan Jacobs) and The Cuban (music supervisors Dondrea Erauw and Michael Perlmutter) won in the other film categories.
HBO’s standout series Watchmen (music supervisor Liza Richardson) claimed the top prize for television drama, while there was a three-way tie between The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (music supervisor Robin Urdang), High Fidelity (music supervisors Manish Raval, Alison Rosenfeld and Tom Wolfe), and Insecure (music supervisor Kier Lehman) to win for best music supervision in a television comedy or musical.
Warren Fischer, Laura Webb, and Lindsay Wolfington, music supervisors for To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You won the Guild’s award for best music supervision in a limited series or television movie.
Aminé Ramer took top honors for the documentary category with her work on Crip Camp. Following last year’s docuseries win for Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men, Rudy Chung won again for the Michael Jordon docuseries, The Last Dance. The Reality Television saw Meryl Ginsberg recognized for The Masked Singer (very appropriate for this past year!).
The Guild of Music Supervisors also honored Maureen Crowe with its Legacy Award for her contributions to the world of music and music supervision. Maureen has given us some of the best soundtracks in films, including The Bodyguard and Wayne’s World, as well as paving the way for female music supervisors and recognition for all music supervisors.
Crowe was presented with her award by director Kenny Ortega and congratulated by television series Fame star Debbie Allen, The Bodyguard actor and producer Kevin Costner, as well as Jay Landers, Dean Pitchford, Michael A. Levine, Neil Meron, Rickey Minor, and Clive Davis. They praised Crowe for her work, friendship, and support in the craft of music supervision.
In 2010, Maureen Crowe created the Guild of Music Supervisors Awards and has been an advocate for its members. Through her perseverance, the Emmy Awards created the category for recognizing success in music supervision. Crowe was raised with a passion for music in a musical theater loving family. She’s an Emmy winner and has redefined the business. Her most recent credits include the Netflix film Sisters on Track, television series Julie and the Phantoms, and the documentary Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It.
The crowd was treated to a special performance by Stevie Wonder who presented Quincy Jones with the Icon Award. Stevie Wonder played a quick tune on the piano singing, “I love you Quincy, we’re friends for life.” Quincy Jones has been part of the music industry for over fifty years and has won twenty-eight Grammy awards. He made music history creating arrangements for Frank Sinatra and producing Michael Jackson’s albums Thriller and Bad.
Numerous stars popped in to congratulate their hero and friend Quincy Jones, including Alicia Keys, Bono, will.i.am, Will Smith, Colin Powell, Lionel Richie, Mary J. Blige, Robin Thicke, John Legend, Jacob Collier, Diane Warren, and Gloria and Emilio Estefan. Many spoke about Quincy Jones as their role model and a huge inspiration to everybody in entertainment. They thanked him for his leadership, hard work, heart, and impact on his community.
A tribute to the Icon Award recipient, Quincy Jones showed the power of the Q and highlighted his long-standing career in the music industry.
Quincy accepted the award and said he felt blessed to find his life’s passion of music. He thanked “all my homies who gathered virtually. All my love and big time props to each and every one of y’all.” Closing out his acceptance speech with the quote “if you can see it, you can be it,” Jones said he shared this honor with everyone he’s worked with over the last seven decades.
Awards attendees also enjoyed performances by Spotlight Artist Angelica Garcia, as well as Andra Day and GMS Award nominees Darius de Haas and Celeste. Andra Day opened the show with the song ‘Tigress & Tweed’ from her film The United States vs. Billie Holiday (music supervisor Lynn Fainchtein).
Spotlight Artist Angelica Garcia performed a medley of ‘Guadalupe’ and ‘It Don’t Hinder Me’ from her recent album. Darius de Haas, who provided vocals for the character of Shy Baldwin in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, performed the original song ‘One Less Angel’ from the series (music supervisor Robin Urdang).
Lastly, guests were treated to two performances from Celeste. First the song, ‘If I Ever Lose This Heaven’ and then her nominated song, ‘Here My Voice’ from The Trials of the Chicago 7 (music supervisors Peter Afterman and Alison Litton) to close out the show. Celeste went on to win Best Song/Recording created for a film.
Presenters included Regina King, Angela Bassett, Connie Britton, Tony Shalhoub, Marin Hinkle, Savan Kotecha, Tony Hawk, Michael McDonald, Bryan Cranston, Michael Chiklis, Eva Noblezada, and Foloke Olowofoyeku.
