Opening the penultimate episode of season 2, ‘Amore mio aiutami (Version No. 2)’ is heard over an “Overture” title card with a floral image. It’s the lead-in to Lexi’s play. ‘Amore mio aiutami (Version No.2)’ fades out as the opening sequence transitions to Lexi at Rue’s home. The song returns as Lexi begins to read the poem “Let This Darkness Be A Bell Tower” by Rilke, transitioning to her reading onstage during her play.

‘Amore mio aiutami (Version No. 2)’ was released on July 5, 1969 on the original motion picture soundtrack for the Italian film of the same name. “Amore mio aiutami” translates to “Help Me, My Love” in English. Amore mio aiutami is an Italian comedy, or Commedia all’italiana, written and directed by Alberto Sordi with original score composed by Piero Piccioni.

Piero Piccioni was an Italian film score composer born in 1921. He is credited with over 300 soundtracks and compositions for TV, radio, film, and more. Piccioni made his radio debut with his big band called 013 in 1938. He was influenced by the use of jazz music by 20th century classical composers and American films. He particularly admired film score composer, Alex North (A Streetcar Named Desire, Spartacus). Piccioni began writing his own songs and was soon published by Carish editions.

During the 1950s, Piero Piccioni was working as a lawyer, securing movie rights for Italian producers, when he was asked to score a documentary film directed by Luigi Polidoro. In the early ’50s Piccioni composed music using the name Piero Morgan, his mother’s maiden name. Piccioni’s first feature film score was Gianni Franciolini’s Il mondo le condanna in 1952. During this time, Piccioni developed close working relationships with directors Francesco Rosi and Alberto Sordi. Piccioni composed the dramatic score to La Tempesta in 1958, kicking off his steady work in Hollywood.

Piccioni won many well-known prizes including the David di Donatello Award for the movie Swept Away (1974) and Nastro d’argento Award for the movie Salvatore Giuliano (1963) by Francesco Rosi to name a few. He has been compared to other Italian composers such as Ennio Morricone (Days of Heaven, The Mission) and Bruno Nicolai (Il Pelo Nel Mondo, Upperseven: L’uomo da uccidere).

Aside from Piero Piccioni’s original score soundtracks, he has had song placements on Tunefind in films and TV shows such as Silver Linings Playbook (2012), American Hustle (2013), Riverdale, and multiple songs in the featured Euphoria episode.
