Winners of the 12th Annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards
The Guild of Music Supervisors celebrated 12 years of recognizing excellence in the craft of music supervision with a virtual gala awards ceremony on March 20th. Once again, the event was virtual, and ticket holders could live stream the awards safely from the comfort of their own homes. Over 300 virtual attendees watched through their various screens as entertaining performances and appearances came together with a shared appreciation for music supervision.
GMS President Joel C. High and Vice President Madonna Wade-Reed welcomed viewers to the 12th Annual GMS Awards. They thanked all the volunteers and everyone involved with the hope that next year we will celebrate the craft of music supervision in person.
Top honors in the film categories went to Netflix’s tick, tick…boom! (music supervisor Steven Gizicki), while Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar (music supervisors Julianne Jordan and Justine Von Winterfeldt), Sylvie’s Love (music supervisors Mandi Collier and Frankie Pine) and Zola (music supervisors Mandi Collier, Jen Malone, and Nicole Weisberg) won in the other film categories.
HBOMax series Lovecraft Country (music supervisor Liza Richardson) claimed the top prize for television drama. Richardson previously won this category for Watchmen last year. HBOMax’s The White Lotus (music supervisor Janet Lopez) won the award for best music supervision in a TV comedy or musical.
Laura Webb and Lindsay Wolfington won the GMS award for best music supervision in a limited series or television movie for their work on To All the Boys: Always and Forever. Wolfington and Webb also won this category last year for the previous TATB installment, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You.
Angela Asistio took top honors for the documentary category for her work on Val. Aminé Ramer won for their work on the HBO Music Box Series in the category for best music supervision in a docu-series, after winning the documentary category last year for Crip Camp. Reality Television saw Eric Medina, Stephanie Diaz-Matos, and Sarah Bromberg recognized for their combined work on Sweet Life: Los Angeles.
The Guild of Music Supervisors honored Mitchell Leib with its Legacy Award for his contributions to the world of music and music supervision. Mitchell is a former executive for Disney, with a career spanning over 30 years in the music industry. He has contributed to projects such as the Pretty Woman soundtrack, TRON: Legacy, the live-action remakes of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King. Mr. Leib graciously accepted the prestigious award and humbly thanked his friends, family, and colleagues. The Legacy Award was presented to Leib by his long-time friend, colleague, and fellow GMS award recipient Diane Warren.
Mitchell Leib later presented Diane Warren with the Guild of Music Supervisors esteemed Icon Award in a heartwarming turn of tables. However, not before industry friend Bonnie Greenburg (Pleasantville, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, What Women Want) could make a cameo during the heartfelt exchange.
The Icon Award could not be a more fitting title for the iconic songwriter Diane Warren. Warren has been called “One of the most prolific American pop songwriters” by the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Diane has received 12 Oscar nominations, 32 Top Ten hits, an Emmy award, 2 Golden Globe awards, and numerous other accolades. She has worked with artists such as Cher, Celine Dion, Aerosmith, LeAnn Rimes, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Mariah Carey. “I see that real icons have received this award previously, and I am proud and humbled to be in their company although I don’t really feel like I am one yet. I feel like I’m just getting started so maybe I’ll be an icon when I grow up if I ever grow up that is!,” said Warren during her award acceptance. This year, Diane Warren is Oscar nominated for her song ‘Somehow You Do’ performed by Reba McEntire from the film Four Good Days.
Awards attendees also enjoyed performances by Spotlight Artist Bahari, as well as Aloe Blacc, GMS Award nominees Goapele and Sebastián Yatra. Goapele opened the show with a choir accompanied performance of ‘Look At Us,’ which was nominated for best TV song from Homeroom.
Spotlight Artist Bahari announced their upcoming single before the duo performed their song ‘Savage’ which was featured in Ginny & Georgia. Guests were also treated to two performances from Aloe Blacc. First the song, ‘Other Side’ and then his personal take on Diane Warren’s Oscar nominated song, ‘Somehow You Do’. Lastly, Sebastian Yatra closed the show with a performance of the best song created for a film, ‘Dos Oruguitas’.
Presenters included Javier Bardem, Jessica Chastain, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Annie Mumolo, and Kristen Wiig. As well as Marlon Wayans, Dave Burd (aka Lil Dickey), Ryan Tedder, Rufus Wainwright, and Laura Karpman, among others.
