Looking Glass tops Billboard’s Top TV Song Chart

This month’s artist spotlight is shining on American pop rock group, Looking Glass. Looking Glass has been jamming out since the ’70s, and their hit ‘Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)’ has been certified Gold. The band has released 2 full-length albums and 5 singles since 1972, though ‘Brandy’ is the most popular with a total of 13 appearances on Tunefind. Looking Glass topped Billboard’s August Top TV Songs chart with an iconic placement in AMC’s Better Call Saul’s final season.

The group was founded by Brooklyn-born guitarist/singer/songwriter Elliot Lurie, bassist Pieter Sweval, and pianist Larry Gonsky, all of whom were students at New Jersey’s Rutgers University. Looking Glass got its start by playing frat parties and at local clubs. The original members split up in the early ’70s after graduation. Lurie and Gonsky linked up again with Sweval and drummer Jeffrey Grob, and Looking Glass was reborn. The new incarnation began writing songs and heavily rehearsing new material.

Their hard work paid off when their music impressed Columbia Records president Clive Davis, who signed them to the Epic Records label. The band’s lucky break was thanks to a producer named Bob Liftin and an original song titled ‘Brandy.’ The song went through many different versions before coming up with one that worked. The song was initially released as the B-side of their single ‘Don’t It Make You Feel Good’ off their self-titled debut album, released in early 1972. ‘Brandy’ was overlooked until a disc jockey from DC flipped the single over and gave the single airtime. The record broke out in the city of Washington and climbed the charts rapidly, peaking six months after its release at the number one position. The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, remaining in the top position for one week. Billboard ranked it as the No. 12 song for 1972.

The song is about a barmaid, so I thought, why don’t I change the name to ‘Brandy.’ So that’s what I did, but when I first finished writing it, I didn’t jump up and down and say, ‘this is a hit.’”- Elliot Lurie, lead guitarist and vocalist.

Elliot Lurie once again got the band back together in 2003. The group toured while playing their own songs and covers. Eventually, they split again. Although the band may not be together forever, it would certainly appear that their classic ‘Brandy, (You’re A Fine Girl)’ will linger on in the hearts, and playlists, of fans all over the world.
