Top TV Song Last Week: Crazy by Daniela Andrade

The return of Netflix’s hit The Umbrella Academy has had a near takeover on Tunefind’s popular music chart. Season 2 returned on July 31st and fans quickly jumped in to track down all the music moments. The top song last week goes to a haunting cover version of ‘Crazy,’ originally by Gnarls Barkley.

Near the end of the first episode, there’s a startling view of Diego’s eyes as he wakes up in a padded cell and the eerie instrumental of ‘Crazy’ begins. The jazzy rhythm soundtracks his struggle to stand while wearing a straight-jacket. Daniela Andrade’s ethereal voice comes in as Diego continues to struggle.

Honduran-Canadian singer Daniela Andrade created a cover version of American soul duo Gnarls Barkley’s debut single ‘Crazy.’ Andrade released her cover as a single in January 2014 with Crooked Lip Records. The track also appears on her 2016 album Covers, Vol. 2. Andrade’s version of ‘Crazy’ was previously featured in season 4 of Suits.

American soul duo, Gnarls Barkley released ‘Crazy’ on their 2006 debut album St. Elsewhere. It reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts around the world. ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2007 and was also nominated for Record of the Year.

‘Crazy’ has notably been covered by Violent Femmes, The Kooks, Ray LaMontagne and countless others before Andrade. The song has continued to be covered since Daniela Andrade’s release, including versions by Donna Lewis, Madilyn Bailey and 2WEI.

Daniela Andrade is a 28 year old Honduran singer/songwriter from Montreal, Canada. Andrade has released numerous singles including an Edith Piaf cover of ‘La Vie En Rose’, 2 EPs and 4 albums. ‘Crazy’ was a viral sensation upon its initial release in 2014.

Andrade started her music career by uploading cover song performances on YouTube and social media. She covered everything from the Beatles to Beyoncé. She gained a following with her versions of ‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay and ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ by Frank Sinatra.

In 2016, Andrade released her atmospheric original debut EP called Shore which led to her first international tour. Her latest album Tamale (2019) is a bilingual, genre-bending record with sounds of jazz and R&B while paying homage to her Honduran roots.

Daniela Andrade has had placements in Suits, Supergirl and Saving Hope. She continues to focus on songwriting, releasing single after single.

Last season of The Umbrella Academy featured a top TV song and dominated Tunefind’s charts for weeks. Popular music moments included nostalgic dance sequences, cover songs from cast members and original score.
