Winners of the 73rd Annual Emmy Awards Music Categories

After last year’s virtual awards, this year’s 73rd Annual Emmy Awards was hosted by Cedric the Entertainer in person at the L.A. Live’s Event Deck at the Microsoft Theater. The big winners of the night were The Crown, Ted Lasso, and Mare of Easttown. The Crown ruled the drama categories and The Queen’s Gambit won for Limited Series. Ted Lasso won Outstanding Comedy and Hacks won several major comedy awards as well.

Music Supervisors Ciara Elwis and Matt Biffa

A big win this year was in the category of Outstanding Music Supervision. After the award was presented for the past three years in a row to Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for the music supervision by Robin Urdang, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and Dan Palladino, a new winner has emerged. This year’s Emmy was awarded to Matt Biffa and Ciara Elwis for the HBO series I May Destroy You. Ciara took the microphone and Matt held the award as they thanked their teams, families, and show creator Michaela Coel while mentioning the challenging work of clearing over 150 songs for the Emmy-winning show.

The 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony was held over two nights on September 11th and 12th. The music categories were awarded on the second evening. An edited version aired on Saturday, September 18th which saw the battle of the streamers. Netflix took the lead, followed by Disney+ and then HBO/HBO Max with the most awards leading into The Primetime Emmys the following day.

Series composer Carlos Rafael Rivera won his second Emmy in the Outstanding Music Composition For A Limited Series for his score in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. Another two-time winner was composer Ludwig Göransson who won for his Original Dramatic Score for the Disney+ series The Mandalorian season 2. Göransson previously won the Emmy for Original Dramatic Score for the The Mandalorian season 1.

First time Emmy winners included Blake Neely who won for the Original Main Title Theme Music in HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez who won the Music & Lyrics category with the original song ‘Agatha All Along’ in Disney+’s WandaVision.
